There’s something about the holidays in Marin County that just feels different, in the best way (except for traffic 🤦🏻♀️). We are weather fortunate to be able to spend time outdoors a little longer. Maybe it’s the way each town decorates their main street creating festive feelings. Many restaurants still seat guests outside, with heaters just in case, as friends and families celebrate the season. Whatever it is, this season always reminds me how lucky we are to call this place home.
Local Lights
A few holiday traditions I love year after year include the holiday lights along Magnolia Avenue, sitting under the lit Redwoods at Perrys’ (with heaters 😉), the Christmas tree on the MRGC pier for all to see when crossing the San Rafael bridge, the San Rafael and Sausalito boat parades with all the boats decorated with lights that sparkle the water with intention. Of course, the magnificent holiday display on Lagunitas just before Phoenix Lake, so much fun and the iconic light glowing atop Angel Island, there’s a softness to it all. You don’t have to pile into the car for a massive light show; a simple evening walk does the trick.
Community Events That Feel Like Home
Tree lightings. School fundraisers. Pop-up markets. Small concerts where everyone seems to know someone on stage. These aren’t just events, they’re reunions disguised as holiday cheer. You bump into old friends, meet new neighbors, and somehow always end up staying longer than planned. That’s Marin for you: come for the twinkle lights, stay for the conversations.
Holiday Shopping
I love that holiday shopping here includes local shops, handmade gifts, thoughtful finds, there’s intention behind the wrapping paper. Buying local isn’t just a nice idea; it’s how we support the people who make our towns feel alive year-round. Plus, you leave with gifts that actually mean something. (And yes, maybe a little something for yourself.) Marin has a very rich creative community.
Slowing Down, Even Just a Little
This might be my favorite tradition of all. Amid the to-do lists and end-of-year hustle, Marin has a way of gently nudging us to slow down. A walk on the trail. A quiet beach moment. Watching the fog roll in like it’s part of the décor. The holidays here remind us that rest is not a reward, it’s a requirement.
Every year, I feel it more deeply: this community shows up. For each other. For traditions. For moments that matter. The holidays in Marin are so special.
However you celebrate, I hope this season brings you warmth, connection, and a few moments where you pause and think, This is home.
Wishing you a joyful holiday season. 😊
